JAKE

We stayed in the hospital another couple days after she woke up. The doctors wanted to make sure her kidney functions were stable and the wound stayed clear of infection. I didn’t care about staying there. As long as she was okay nothing else mattered.

She was getting irritated with me after we got home. It was obvious each time I jumped to get her something or do something for her. I knew it was more at the situation than with me. “Jake, I’m not completely helpless.”

“I just don’t want you to hurt yourself.” I tried placating her but she rolled her eyes in annoyance.

“I’m going to be fine. You heard the doctor. He said just don’t overdo it. You won’t even let me walk to the bathroom.”

Okay, she had me there. Maybe I was being a little overbearing. I couldn’t stand the thought of her hurting herself after what happened. Guilt was eating at me. It was my fault that she was in pain. I’d failed at protecting her. She kept getting hurt ever since she met me. Maybe she was better off without me, but I was a selfish bastard. There was no way I was letting her go.

“Did you see what the tabloids are saying?” She changed the subject.

“I tell you all the time not to read that garbage.”

“They’re saying that it was a rabid fan girl. Others are saying it was that crazy chick Maria, who broke you and Rissa up. I guess it’s better that way.”

“Yeah, way better than the actual truth. Although, who would believe it was a mafia hit?”

“It might make you even more popular. That bad boy image would sky rocket.” She smirked. I rolled over onto my stomach propped up on my elbows grinning at her.

“Is that what attracted you to me? My bad boy image?”

“Of course. Everyone loves a bad boy.” She giggled, finally able to laugh a bit without wincing.

“Oh yeah?” I gave her the wounded puppy look.

“Yeah, but then I got to know you, and you are so much more than the rock star image you present to the world. I like the real Jake Moore way better than the bad boy.” That made me grin. My phone started ringing and I groaned, hating anything or anyone interrupting my time with her.

I kissed her forehead quickly before getting up to answer it. “Hey, Cliff. What’s up buddy?”

“I’m just calling to let you know that I will have to work on wedding stuff from Vegas for a while. I’m finishing up this project for my client.”

“Okay, I think we are going to have to put it off until Jessica heals a bit more anyway,” I said looking over at her.

“Yes, darling, I figured as much. The rest of the renovations I’m working on shouldn’t take more than a month, but Riss should be back soon. She can go with Jessica to look at dresses when she returns from her shoot. I emailed you a list of venues where security is tight and easily manageable.
